What do you think of tip jars at places like Starbucks, Quiznos, etc.?
They seem kind of ridiculous to me. I'm waiting for them to show up at McDonalds.
I think they are pretty cheesy. I almost never leave anything in one, except at the car wash. But I would tip at the car wash if they didn't have the tip jar.

I don't like tip jars. I don't tip the cook at a restaurant. Why would I tip the guy who makes my half caf double de-caf?

I don't care for them either.
If someone deserves a tip I'll give it to them. But they shouldn't have something that says, "I expect a tip!"
Besides, don't they split all that tip money between all the waitresses and waiters?
That seems kind of unfair. If one waiter gets a ton of tips one night and another waiter doesn't get any...then why should he get some of that money?
or am I wrong about that?

Tip jars are OK.....
If ya feel like adding something,ya add it......... (They arent trying to make you add anything)
@ this one place i goto they have the tip cup @ the register and when you give them a tip, they add it to the cup.. Then at the end of the shift they count up all tips and divide them equally amoung the staff....

I don't like tip jars because they are normally put out in places where tips are not warranted. They trick people into tipping out of ignorance.
You don't tip at fast food restaurants, which includes Starbucks or any other place where you stand in line, order your food, and take the food away yourself. You don't tip cash register operators or cooks. You tip waiters who take your order, bring your order to your table, and keep your drink refilled -- all three services.

Well now I know how this board feels about tipping in general, I'm glad my customers don't feel the same. It's their tips that send me to coffee conventions and Barista jams, it's their tips that pay my yearly subscriptions to Coffee industry magazines and buy me other educational material, that pay my yearly dues to the Barista Guild of America, and buy my equipment for an upcoming Barista Championship. So those tips come back in the form of excellent drinks backed by knowledge and experience. Perhaps, if some of were my customer, you'd be tipping too. Your loss:)

If the jar is unlabeled, I think it's tacky. If the jar says TIPS on it, you can always write on a slip of paper: Here's a tip: Tip jars are tacky.
