I saw the description of how to handle tipping for movers on the findalink page, which I found helpful. I will be moving from one high-rise building to another. Besides the movers, there will be the superintendent and the custodial staff of each building who may be helping out in some fashion -- should each of them be tipped in this situation as well?

That sounds like a good idea. It really depends upon how they help you and how much work they do that is outside of their normal work. Maybe you could describe a little more about how you think they will help.

Most apartment superintendent, custodial and doormen tipping occurs at Christmastime or because of help with packages, parking, etc.
The size of a Christmas tip varies with the size of the building. You actually tip bigger for smaller buildings. You also consider the luxuriousness of the building. For a typical building, the Christmas tip is $30-50 for doormen, $50-100 for supers, and $20-30 for handymen or elevator operators. A super at a luxury building might get as much as $100-300, but that is not very typical. The only exception is if you are planning some renovations, then you might make the super's tip even bigger.

Just to make sure I didn't sidetrack us, can you give a little more information about what services you think they will be providing.

James:
Why do you recommend tipping movers, but not other service people such as gardeners and painters ?

Because this is what is customary.
