Not been a really great week!

My DH just came in to tell me he had to go check a cow that was down in the pasture, so I left the computer running and went with him. One of his registered bulls was dead, we have no idea what could have happened, he was fine this morning. Several days ago I found a heifer calf with a big knot on her neck and was here by myself and it was late evening...did all I knew to do but she was dead by morning! Just makes you sick, you get attached to them, or at least we do, you drive yourself nuts trying figure out why...we think the calf may have been possibly bitten by a snake, but there is no clue on the bull!!! This is the part of ranching I hate.

I'm sorry. A lot of people don't know what's it's like being attached to an animal, but it really is a sad thing when something like that happens. :(

Thanks theyeti, I am an animal lover and should probably not be in this business. Sure shouldn't let yourself get so attached to the cows, but I can't help it. They really do have personalities and traits that make one stand out from another, and yes, a lot of them that are my favorites are named...another dumb thing to do.

It's not a dumb thing to do... whether or not you "should" be in the business, you've got to make it fun, and animals are a very fun part of life on this planet, so why not give them a name? I believe animals are at the very least somewhat intelligent, so being called a name rather than "hey, you cow" probably makes them feel good. :)

Do you do an autopsy or something on a cow to find out what killed it?

You can, but rigormortus (sp?) had set in so not easily done at that point. We were still talking today about what could possibly have happened, some things you just never get answers to, I guess.
