I can't go anywhere is 2004 without someone putting out a tip Jar. Every mall store, every donut shop...

Tipping rules need to be changed. Tips were supposed to given for exceptional service. Not Service in General. Why oh why does a waitress who brings me a burger deserve a tip if the service was nothing special? After, all its not like the burger was free or I had the option of going to the kitchen myself to pick it up. Because its part of their pay? -- well, then get another job or negotiate a better package..

I resent the fact that everyone wants to get tipped. I resent the fact that tipping has become an obligation and not a reward.

Am I nuts, or is there anyone out there who agrees

PS – that’s why service has gone down in America. If you are going to get a tip anyway, then why kill yourself with “service
.

Joel,
I am not even going to bother with you. Why don't you go to the A and P and buy your food. I am a college student. I don't know if you went to college or have any idea how much it costs but waiting tables is flexible around my school schedule. It is the only way I can make my rent, pay my bills and not become a welfare burden. You should be a decent enough person to leave even ten percent. If you are not going to tip, don't waste time sitting at the table, take your cap home so the server can make a couple of bucks. Oh yeah. Get a job or use your food stamps so you don't get urine in your tea

Well, if I had to name just one thing I've learned at frappydoo this year, it'd have to be that tipping sure is a passionate topic...

I really hope you tip well those few who do give great service. I have a daughter who is a waitress. She makes way below minimum because they get to keep all of the tips they make. You say negotiate a better package. A little difficult to do when you are a student and working on acquiring skills. I admit some waitresses give bad service. Have you ever tried being a bit more friendly and to remember that maybe, just maybe like you , they have bad days too. It is not easy being friendly and smiley everyday, even at work. You should know this if you worked in the food service business.

Tipping is an expected part of prepared food service, end of story. If you don't want to tip, buy fast food, or make it yourself. It's not like it's a big secret that you will be expected to add 15% to your bill to pay for the tip. If your bill is $20, what's an extra $3 to pay for your service? If your meal is $100 and you can't afford the extra $15 for the tip, then you can't afford a $100 meal and you should have stayed home and ate mom's meatloaf. If you don't want to tip, then don't use any service that involves tipping. Nobody has to go out to eat, use a valet, caddie, etc. to get through their day. These are convenience services that involve tipping, if you can't afford the tip, then you can't afford the convenience. It's not like you have to tip someone to get to work in the morning, unless you take a cab. If that bothers you, buy a car or take the bus. I am so tired of people whining about tipping when tipping isn't an inherent part of any everyday activity. It's not like tips are taxes on your hard earned money. You have to pay taxes if you make money, you only have to tip if you choose to use a convenience that involves tipping.

I've probably said this before on here, but I try to tip well because it's a job I wouldn't want to do myself. Joel up there even said that he knows it's "awful work" - so I don't understand why he wouldn't be appreciative of someone who does a service for him that he knows firsthand is difficult.

Joel,
I am not even going to bother with you. Why don't you go to the A and P and buy your food. I am a college student. Isn't this kind of unnecessary hostility? Since when does the world owe us one since we have to work to go to school? I have to work to get myself through school too, and I'm still not done. I ensure this continued opportunity but giving knock down, drag out Superior customer service. If everyone is trying so hard to make it, then all the more reason why they should give even better service.

Unfortunately, if my waitress had a bad enough day where they are short with me or completely blow it, they should stay home or keep personal life out of the work. Service industries are in business to serve. Plus, they are earning MY money which I have done my OWN slaving to come by! A decent experience, fair service, a cheery greeting, sure, 10%. But clearly inferior service expecting a bottom line tip?? Ha! LOL

There is this new thing called equal opportunity: do your job, do it well, or get out of the way for the people who are Willing to give 100%. I do not share gratuities with servers who can't serve.

By the way, I'm not cheap- I have given up to a 50% tip when someone really Wowed me, and I frequently give 20-25% if things are really well done.

If you are going to put urine in my tea, then YOU need to be the one without a job and needing foodstamps!

PS- I think the poor servers should go ahead and go on welfare then! They would still get what they wanted since others would be giving the monetary ride, and then the rest of the world wouldn't have to suffer from the poor attitude and inferior service.

OK, you guys. This is the etiquette forum. You're all getting a little bit testy. I think we've said enough on the topic.

{soapbox} I wanted to mention this before, but hopefully it goes without saying, please refrain from making personal attacks against other members. Many people feel strongly about an issue and will convey their opinions passionately, which is understandable. However, criticizing someone's job or making childish remarks about their assumed lifestyle, etc. is not a necessary, viable, or mature part of an argument. These forums are here for everyone to use as a means of friendly communication, debate, discussion, and just plain conversation. Remember that we are all friends here, and not to get too carried away. I know I can get a bit worked up sometimes too, but remember to take a deep breath and think about what you are going to say before you say it. I apologize if my earlier post on this subject offended anyone. It was not directed at any person or persons, just my opinion on the subject. We should probably keep these kind of discussions in the Great Debate section of the board. Ok, enough said.
