My stylist rents her booth space. She sets her own prices, appointments, etc. She is self-employed. Thus, she is the "owner" of her hairstyling business.

Should I tip her or not? BTW, she charges quite a bit for her services, but she is worth it.

Thanks

You tip the owner the same as anyone else if she provides the service. Her price is set assuming a tip and in an attempt to be competitive. It may be higher than other people, but that is because she is trying to provide a higher level of service and reach a different clientel. The amount someone charges for providing the service does not affect the percentage of the tip.

I don't tip my hairdresser. She owns the salon and charges more than any of the other sylists - I pay a premium for a "Master Cut". If another stylist were to do my hair, I would tip them.

I'm with Madge on this one...where I go charges a pretty penny. One Christmas I tipped a very NICE tip to my guy and he didn't even acknowledge it, so decided I'll just pay his price and forget it, then. He seems plenty happy, been going to him for over 6 years. Still drive back to Midland just to go to him, so I am a loyal customer, too! lol

I cut my own hair, so I don't have to worry about it. I got tired of going to hair dressers who didn't listen. They would just cut it the way that they liked it and not how i asked them to. A pair of clippers cost 20-30 dollars, if you know how, you can save alot of money. The only problem is that sometimes I don't "feel" like cutting it. The more you do it, the better you get at it. I have been cutting my own hair for about 10 years. I actually get alot of compliments so, I don't think that I look that bad, I hope. ;)

Midland, Texas..... oil, black gold, Texas Tea.....

couldn't resist Raybeck. I still give my hair lady a 20 dollar bill. She only charges 12 but I think that is a tadbit low. She always tries to give me the change and I just say," no, you earned it all." I don't tip when I go to Pro-cuts simply because I have never had a good haircut at the one closest to me.

Frodo you sound like a man who can did a little bit of it all. I would not attempt to cut my hair the way I wear it. My spikes would look like a birds nest on my head.

JAW, there are some pretty rich hill billies living there...lol

If my guy only charged $12.00, I would probably do exactly what you do, that is really cheap for today's prices!!! I think my guy has his tip built in, anyway...lol

Well the lady who cuts our hair has been in this saloon since her girls were babies. She has cut hair forever and is now a widow. You can't help but love her. She still volunteers and goes with the HS band on all of their football games and trips. She does the girls hair and pretty much is their mom. Everyone here loves her. If truth be known 20 is not enough for all of the years of service she has given our town.

I would love helping someone in the situation you describe JAW!!! It is worth every cent you give her, especially since I am sure she does appreciate your kindness...that means so much!

I would certainly be doing the same thing you are, J.A.W. That woman deserves it, after everything she's done for her community and all of her sufferings. My hair is short and kinda spikey, too - although mine is extremely curly!! My hairdresser charges $37.00 for a haircut (in fact I'm going this evening.... better check the balance in my checkbook!!http://www.frappydoo.com/forum/images/smilies/smilez.gif)

I just found out something about me.

If I go to the little lady we know in the salon ... I tip her.
When she can not cut our hair we go to Pro Cuts. I seldom tip there unless it is just one of us getting a hair cut. Yesterday we had to go to Pro Cuts. There was 3 of us getting our hair done. We had three seperate hair dressers. They waited til we were all through to pay. I didn't tip because it was already a big chunk of money for what we had done. Was that kosher?

This is not a rebuke, so don't take this the wrong way. This is just answering your question about tipping.

You should tip at Pro Cuts just like you tip at the corner salon. As stated in my first post in this thread, the cost of the service at a hair salon or barbershop does not dictate whether or not you tip. You tip for good service. If you can't afford the cost of the service plus the tip, then you should cut your own hair or find a cheaper place. If they did a good job of cutting your hair, then you tip.

In this instance, since they combined your bill, you could have just included the gratuity when you paid. They would have split it out. You could have also tipped each stylist seperately.

I alway's tip where I was pleased with the service.
