WOW!!! You sure got my attention there!!!!!!!!! My husband is asleep and I was trying to be quiet but when I read your post I sat straight up in my chair and yelled..Cockroaches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The thing I am most terrified of is cockroaches!!! I cant even watch a movie with cockroaches in it!!! My goodness what an odd pet! (Im sorry but I would step on them, or run out of the house screaming....the very thought of it makes my hair stand on end. I don't mind snakes at all, and the spiders would be ok, as long as they couldnt get out, but not the roaches!! :)

Hee hee hee!!We get that reaction a lot!! ACtually I don't have to look at them since we've moved. My hubby has his own amimal room now.As long as they don't get out They don't bother me.

Well, I think Kezzer's got us all beat on the exotic pets.
I have an Emporer Scorpion named Gemini, A Chilean Rose Tarantula named Rose and a little, itty bitty frog named Kermie.
I love my froggy!
I would love to have some more pets, but my house is not big enough...hubby says we must wait until some of the kids' move out. I'm still not sure if he was kidding about that!
Kezzer,
The tarantula abandoned the egg sack. We didn't have a clue what to do, so we called a vet out to the house...She said the sack was infertile and that's why the mother wouldn't go near it. We had to dispose of the entire sack. I'm very sorry about the delay...It slipped my mind completely!

:( Oh, that stinks!! But I guess that's nature. We've had lots of disappointments like that ourselves. Poor mommy spider:( As long as she's ok, that's the important thing.

well she seems ok....it's funny, she didn't want to go near the sack, but after it was taken out...she got all depressed!
She went into her log and didn't come out for like three days straight. She didn't eat or drink or anything.

A depressed spider, that's a new one!! hee-hee. Don't get me wrong, I'm not making fun of your choices in pets at all...alot of people do the same thing to me when I tell them I have a pet rat, and I'm sure they wouldn't think a rat could get depressed or lonely either, but they can. My rat was awfully depressed for weeks after the other rat, her compainion passed away...it was so sad. I have come to learn that all animals, or in your case, spiders can have feelings too. :)

OOh!! SPeaking of rats I forgot, we have a rat! I always forget about him, he's a hairless rat and his name is Jon Luc. He's so funny looking!!!
Karen, That's strange! At least she's ok now!

My rat has hair, but a friend of mine has two of those hairless rats. When she first got them, I thought they would be really ugly, but she brought them to work to show me, and they are actually kind of cute!! :)

How strange about the spiders egg. We had a cockatiel several years ago and she lived for like 10 years. About 5 years after we had her she started acting really strange. We would put her out on the porch in the mornings so she could enjoy outside and she just started going crazy, making very strange noises.
When we took her down that evening there she was on the bottom sitting on an egg. Up until then we didn't even know if she was a girl or boy. We called the vet also and he said it was just an unfertilized egg. I had never heard of that before. Stanger yet is from that day forward until the day she died she spent 75% of her time on the bottom of the cage sitting on this little toy ball we had in there for her to play with. It never did hatch but not from lack of her trying. :)

How are the hedgehogs doing, Debby?
http://washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20040227-064334-2470r.htmDORTMUND, Germany, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- A German man who kept more than 200 spiders in his home, along with other odd pets, was apparently killed and eaten by his critters.
Mark Voegel, 30, apparently was bitten by his favorite pet, a deadly Black Widow spider, the Daily Mirror reported Friday.
"Spiders were running all over him," said a police spokesman.
"They were coming out of his nose and mouth. Larger pieces of flesh had been torn off by the lizards and were taken back to the webs of tarantulas and other bird-eating spiders.YIKES!

I don't like spiders. Nope, definately not spiders. I have a Bearded Dragon and a Green Iguana though. I used to have an Amelanistic Corn snake, but he passed away as a result of complications from a respiratory infection.

I can understand snakes, "dragons", exotic lizards, hedgehogs, chinchillas, ferrets, racoons, squirrels, etc. But BUGS? EEEKKK!!! I call my sons and/or husband in from another room to kill a spider! I don't think I could be comfortable with that living arrangement, lead sealed cage or not!

Spiders aren't exactly cuddly, are they?

I had 2 ferrets (not that exotic) & a young iguana. The ferret named Selah was living in a 3 tiered large cage, she loved it. One day she fell from the top tier & wasn't the same since. She was really lethargic & would just lay on my shoulder. Within a few days my husband tried to pick her up & she bit right through his thumb nail (right through!), in a reflex he tossed her in her cage, then felt bad & tossed her on the ground near the dog (Jenna). Instead of landing near the dog, she landed "on" her, she dug her nails on the side of the dog & Jenna was moving side to side, the ferret was swinging to & fro, it was a real sight. A few days later Selah died, my husband tried to give her mouth to mouth. (if only all this was on tape). The iguana story... the light in the cage that was recommended by the previous owner was too hot, you really don't want to know what happened. Needless to say, we miss him.

I was at the pet store today to buy my son another gerbil when I saw a sign that said hairless rat. I just had to see it. So I asked the guy to get it out of its bed and my first thought was EW! GROSS! I have always not liked rats. I told my son he would never have one in this house! Well, I stood there watching this little fellow and started to think he was so ugly you gotta love him! I called home and my husband said no and I started to (whine) about this little naked rat and what if I could find a free cage? After 30 min. on my cell phone I was coming home with him instead of a gerbil! Everyone loves him! The kids named him Rufus after the cartoon Kim Possable. (They have a naked mole rat.) So here is my first exotic pet. He's an albino which is a plus. The kids just learned about albinos this last summer. I saw some others have hairless rats and was just curious about their behaviors. I saw that some can perform little ticks or tasks. Are rats teachable? Are they playful? Any suggestions to how we can enjoy the most out of him? My friends and family are NOT going to be any help. They will probably all stick to ew! gross!

It's said that rats have the intelligence of a small dog, so they are teachable. I know for a fact that you can litter-train (http://www.dapper.com.au/articles.htm#litter) him/her ;)
I think rats are supposed to be pretty smart. I saw a special about them on TV once.

When I was growing up, we had a pet rat. It stayed in an aquarium. At mealtime (hers, not ours), we would take the lid off the aquarium. The rat would climb down, walk into the kitchen, eat its food out of a little margarine tub, walk back into the playrooom, and climb back into it's aquarium. It was pretty smart.

Nothing exotic here unless you count the occasional lizards and tree frogs that meander in and out.

Noseypoo!!! That is an ADORABLE rat!!! I missed this, till now...just now saw it. Is it yours? I love rats...I have had rats for pets off and on for 20 years. I just bought one recently for my daughter, I posted the pic of her in the pets pictures thread here. I love that picture of the rat you posted!!!! That is one of the cutest ones I have seen! I have had many small pets in the past, hamsters, gerbils, mice...and have been bit by all of them, except the rats. I have never yet been bitten by a rat. I also had pygmy hedgehogs and duprasi...the hedgies and the duprasi never bit either. Rats are very smart and actually very gentle creatures. I hope you will take a look at the pic of our new one that I posted a couple weeks ago here in the pet pics thread. :)

I think Ray might get on his horse and ride into the "wild blue yonder" if I told him I'd be adding a "rat" to our menagerie!!! Or have me committed somewhere, not sure which action he might take, so better skip the pet rat!!!

Well, good for you, Debby, if you and your daughter enjoy your pet and you take care of it, you should be able to have it!!! I can get attached to some pretty weird little things, so if I tried one, I would probably get attached to it too!!!
JAW, I'm glad you got a big laugh out of that...made me start laughing thinking about you laughing!!! {rotflmbo}

I think you would love a pet rat! I swear they are the sweetest little things!!! I have had many pet rats in the past years and never met a rat I didn't like! LOL But seriously...they are very sweet. Did you see the pic I posted in the pets forum several weeks ago of our new rat? She is adorable! :) Plus, since they are in a cage, your hubby surely can't complain. Like I said...mine hates rats, but since she is in a cage and can't "get" to him...he is okay with it. It is rather funny though when my 2 yr old walks up to him with Dora (the rat) craddled in her arms and says...daddy look...and he jumps sky high and says, "Get that thing away from me!!!" {toothy}
