"SAN FRANCISCO - The first cloned-to-order pet sold in the United States is named Little Nicky, a 9-week-old kitten delivered to a Texas woman saddened by the loss of a cat she had owned for 17 years.

The kitten cost its owner $50,000 and was created from DNA from her beloved cat, named Nicky, who died last year.

"He is identical. His personality is the same," the owner, Julie, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. Although she agreed to be photographed with her cat, she asked that her last name and hometown not be disclosed because she said she fears being targeted by groups opposed to cloning.

Yet while Little Nicky, who was delivered two weeks ago, frolics in his new home, the kitten's creation and sale has reignited fierce ethical and scientific debate over cloning technology, which is rapidly advancing."

Personally, even as an animal lover with 2 dogs and 2 cats of my own, I think it's pretty ridiculous to clone any animal when there are so MANY out there already provided by God and nature to choose from should one die. It makes no sense to clone a pet when there are millions out there put to death because no one wants to adopt them. This just creates unneeded chaos, IMHO, not to mention a total WASTE OF MONEY. Heck that woman paid $50,000 for a cloned pet? I only paid 10 bucks for my older cat at the pound when she was 12 weeks old plus another 90 for her shots and spaying and she is such a wonderful pet!

Who do YOU think got the better deal????

I completely hear you. It's actually one of the arguments in the article by an animal activist they said "how many stray cats are euthanized each year because they can't find a home" and also "how many cats could she have provided a home for with $50,000! Plus the whole ethical issue...do they have a soul? I love my animals (2 dogs and a cat) SO much and I don't ever want to lose them, but cloning? there's just something so wrong about playing god in my eyes....plus in the article it said cloning was far from an exact science some of the animals cloned don't even have the same coat color or personality as the animal "duplicated" - and they can have lots of health problems. I have a healthy pound puppy, another whose idiot family was going to euthanize a pure-bred 2 year old bloodhound, and a kitty whose family didn't want him because he had a poopy problem with his long white hair (he's almost all persian - no smushy face...) and I stopped giving him wet food...and...viola...problem solved. He was on his way to the shelter when I saved him. people are loopy....

I agree. I have 5 cats and a dog. I love them all SO much, but ya know? Death is part of life. I can understand her reasoning, but it's just ridiculous. When an animal that you love passes you grieve, you try to overcome and when you're ready you get a new animal and form a new bond. And like you guys said, she spent $50,000 on the cloning. She could've saved A LOT of cats in memory of her cat. That would've been the respectable LOGICAL thing to do.
