I just hate it when people post once and are never seen and/or heard from again! http://www.addis-welt.de/smilie/smilie/boese/tantrum.gif
Thank you ... that's all {toothy}

I hear ya! We go through all this effort of welcoming them. I was never officially welcomed and I'm up to 260 posts? We have the same group of 6-7 people and all these "new members" we never hear from! Especially those that come and ask advice...why ask advice from people you don't know if you don't want to stick around and get to know them...hmmmph...
I hear ya barkin' big dog....

You weren't welcomed?! Maybe that's it! We need to stop welcoming people, so they post {toothy}
Well here's your Welcome then http://www.addis-welt.de/smilie/smilie/liebe/hb.gif, now don't you stop posting, ya hear? {rotflmbo}

and miss your little green man? Never!
If I didn't have frappy what would make coming to work worthwhile? actually working?
I don't know if they need to stick around when asking for advice. I might join a technical forum to ask a question about a software glitch without intending to stick around and make friends. Someone else might just pop in to ask for advice if they read several of the threads and think good advice is given.
But I agree, I can't understand why you would join, make one post (outside of asking for advice on something), and then disappear.
BTW, JacMac, welcome to FrappyDoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {party}

Maybe Jim should make the advice board so guests can post? No need for signing up then, if all they where going to do is ask one question and never come back {fonzy}
That's not a bad idea unless spammers would attack.

True, but if there are no spammers, all the moderators would be out of a job ;) lol
We used to do a better job of welcoming every new member. Maybe that would improve it. I'm kind of thinking that if you joined with an intention to be active (like JacMac), then you are going to post a lot. If you didn't, then welcoming you might not make a difference.
Is there anyone here who joined just for the heck of it and then stuck around and became an active member?
JacMac

Thanks Alec, http://www.addis-welt.de/smilie/smilie/diverse/rev.gif
I guess I see your point about popping in with one question, but I also weigh the advice with the personality of the poster. It's nice to get perspective from others, but to take advice from someone who doesn't know you and who you don't know....I guess for me is a little strange. What is right for one, may not be for another and I wouldn't want to take financial advise from a poor person...so I try to get to know others at the same time that I get their perspective, y'know? It is strange, though, how many drive-bys we get here....

first off, it took me so long to form what I was trying to say on the last one that I missed about 5 posts between you and nosey! I actually only joined to ask the question of tipping a hairdresser. Then wound up reading other posts and needing to voice my opinion. It all started with the southern racist thing. Had it simply been friendly banter like this, I might have been too intimidated to chime in, feeling like everyone else knew each other so well.
actually I did feel that a bit in the beginning...
but I definitely feel welcome now...
so thank you again!

Maybe we need to be more rude to each other so that people won't feel like we are all friends and fear joining in. :)
There's nothing like 300+ members and 10-20 that actively participate. That doesn't exactly work with the 80-20 rule.
I think Jim added the advice forums to attract people to Frappydoo. It sounds like it worked for you, jacmac. I'm sure he'll be pleased to hear that.
Usually what happens at small boards is someone will join who is disenchanted with another board. S/he will fall in love with the place and invite about 10-20 people from the prior board. They were all buddies there, so they will start posting like crazy at the new place and things will really take off. The 10-20 will also invite people from other boards where they are active.
What makes people join a board is activity, IMO. If we can get the activity level up here for a sustained period then I think more people will join (and post).
FrappyDoo is listed in the Google Directory and has a pretty high rating for searches. The more diverse topics we start, the more people will end up here through searches. That's one reason it is important to name your thread well. The name of the thread shows up in the title of the page, and that makes it more relevant for searches.

Maybe the Moderators or Jim should send a "come back" email to all members {fonzy}

Hey we belong to a technical forum. We go read the posts. A technical forum is not really set up for making friends. But you come on here and instantly you go," wow I like Alec, JacMac, Nosey, Jim, Grimey and good CG and we can't forget yeti or Raybeck. This is set up for that kind of interaction.
That is why drive by posters need to be classified as the Fart Smellers not the Smart Fellers. If they were smart they would have stuck around like us and had all these neat tags stuck under their names. Drive by posters, poke their heads in the door, stir up the air, then leave. {fart}

Well said, J.A.W.! well said...
and just as a note, I felt smarter after reading Grimey's post...Nosey's post snuck in there before I could post mine. I feel dumber for it being in that order....

I'm guilty of it at a couple forums. Sometimes you look at a place, decide it's really cool, but then later realize you just don't have the commitment, time or mental or whatever to go through with it. And it really does take a huge commitment to become a member of a community, especially in this format. So I can sort of understand the drive-byers.

Apparently Jim did send out some "ya'all come back" emails. :-) Got mine today. I started here in 2001 with a marriage problem then the site was offline. I had to go elsewhere for help. Now I moderate a forum specifically for that purpose. It takes a lot of time along with my other interests on the net. Possibly emailing members to show interest in them would sort of draw them into the conversation so to speak if they seem to drop away. You all do have a good place to visit for a variety of people.

I had a hard drive crash, and where I was relying on bookmarks I couldn't remember but a few! (Old age is terrible, chaps and chapesses!) But I could never forget Frappydoo - it must be the name :) I belonged to too many forums (or is it fora? I didn't do Latin) anyway. But I didn't get a letter - or did it not go out to us what was posting anyway? (I didn't do much English either!)

Got some "bad" news, frappettes - I'm here to stay!! Heck - I want my avatar, darn it!! By the way - where's everyone getting their smilies from?
Having a good time at FrappyDoo - silly name, but I like it anyway!!

There is a box at the bottom of this page that says "Posting Rules." Click on the link that says "Smilies are On."
Also, if you "Go Advanced" instead of "Post Quick Reply," you get the same box at the bottom of the page. If you go to your "User CP" and "Edit Options," you can change your editor down at the bottom.
I'm looking at the Enhanced Interface right now, and next to font, font size, and font color is a smilie. You can scroll through the first 10 or so, and then you can click on the list for all 190+.

This is my first posting. Everyone seems very chummy here. I've read enough around to know I should not use CAPs and be open to the friendly advice. Okay, so I hope I get a reply or two so I'm not a drive by.... Which forum is the best place for me to work up past the "fart smeller". I hope I don't stay at that level very long.
Madge
04-02-2005, 02:10 PM
Sorry, misse, but you're kind of stuck with that until you get a certain number of posts/threads under your belt. I think the members that actually LIKE "Fart Smeller" are few and far between, but the moniker DOES have it's purpose! Look forward to hearing more from you!

I'll never forget when I was new to the forum and the first time I noticed "fart smeller" as my name...I was so embarrassed, thought I had accidently done something to cause it, my family got a big kick out of it!!! It doesn't last long, I promise...

so ...Stretch... Grimey? does the BMW avatar mean that you like cars, and does grimey mean you know how to work on them? My husband is good with cars. He replaces things like alternators and brakes himself and supposedly saves us money. Then he promptly spends it on golf weekends and more car parts. :)

Frank Grimes was a character on "The Simpsons." Homer gave him a couple of nicknames - Stretch and Grimey.

I don't remember why I picked the BMW avatar.

OH wow Grimey.... I just got a new wrinkle in my brain and all about the simpsons too...d'oh..... Maybe I should take Homer's stance on learning something new:
How is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. Remember when I took that home winemaking course, and I forgot how to drive?
