We have a new puppy - a miniature schauzer. It is almost 3 months old. She is a lot of fun except for two things - there is always a surprise in her crate when we get up in the morning (6 AM), and she bites a lot.

What time does your dog get up in the morning? Do you feed it when it gets up or do you wait for a set time? When do the things quit biting? I've been told that puppies do it because they are teething. When do they get their adult teeth?

I bet when you were three months old, there was always a surprise in your "crate" at 6 a.m. too!

ahhhh puppies, how big is the crate, James. if its too big there will be surprizes. At 12 weeks if her last time out (and you are sure she goes) by about 10:00 at night, she should be able to make it by about 6am, especially if you withhold water after about 8:00. It will also improve if you keep a set schedule and as she matures a bit. As far as the biting, you need to nip that in the bud right away. All puppies gnaw and bite, but they must be redirected and taught NEVER to put their mouth on you. I can recommend a few wonderful training books if you like.

:) Heck, I'll recommend 2 right now, both available at Borders, and considered required reading for trainers, and down to earth for pet owners.

"Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson puppies, chapter 6

"The Dog Listener" by Jan Fennell puppies, chapter 15

now if I was as good with puters, {confused} I'd stick an animated schnauzer right here for you to grab for your own use, or maybe a wiggling corgi butt (my current breed) but I don't know how.

She's doing pretty well. We're going to find an obedience trainer.

Oh boy. My Schipperke is about fourteen weeks old. He's doing well on the potty training, but that was two weeks of me setting my alarm every three hours untill he got the hint. The biting was another story....I started to think I actually owned a baby T. Rex. I called the breeder for advice, and she said to say "NO" very very loud and forcefully EVERY SINGLE TIME he starts biting. So there you go. Positive reinforcement is also very important. Good luck!

We took her to obedience boarding school while we were on vacation. She is doing better with the biting, but now she is growling and barking at strangers before she licks their fingers.

I know this is an old post, but oh well..Our Schipp (Patton) is now almost two....he is amazing and adorable, has definitely gotten over the puppy biting stage, but now lunges at everyone he sees on the street. We took him to obedience training, but.....I think our little furry friends are trying to shield us from every danger that they see. Still...how can I make him stop???
