I am stealing some topics from another forum.

Saving Private Ryan is my current favorite.

It had plenty of action and suspense, it seemed realistic, the acting was good, and it was a tearjerker too.

There's some movie about these three guys who come home from war, and one of them lost both of his hands. It is an old black and white, but I can't remember the name. The guy who played the handless person was actually handless.

My favorite war movie so far is Band of Brothers - more of a miniseries, but it counts.

In all honesty, while Saving Private Ryan was great as it opened eyes in theaters, it has some MAJOR historical problems along with it and every time I watch it I really want to distance myself from it.

There's so much that could go into a war movie regarding history that in most cases would make it more interesting... I just wish writers and directors would do it.

If you all are talking straight out of the box full fledged, no romance, no nonsense movie then it would have to be Full Metal Jacket hands down. Nosey has great taste in movies. Apocalypse Now was another good one.

But I have to agree with Mr. J on his choice. I love watching Band of Brothers. Saving Private Ryan is one I can sit through again and again just because they bring in the whole loosing all of your sons side of it. You can't help but get into wanting them to get him home for the mother.

Has anybody seen Enemy at the Gates? It's not the BEST movie adaptation, but it moves into a part of the war that few have ever even really heard about let alone are knowledgeable about.

Well, I recommend everyone does

Even if it's not perfect, it's still good:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0215750/

and

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enemy_at_the_Gates

You should change the fact that you haven't seen it. I'm guessing it's available at most rental places.

Annaud made the film also as a sort of tribute to his friend and fellow director Sergio Leone
That came from the link you provided via Wikipedia. Now if he made this film in the fashion that Sergio Leone made his string of spaghetti westerns I know we will love it. Sergio Leone is one of the best directors. I hope this tribute is in that fashion.

Thanks for the recommendation Mr. J. I'll tell hubby to have Netflix send it.
