Which way should you pass food at the dinner table?

Easter sunday at dinner we had a disagreement about which way to pass the food. I said you pass to the left. My mother said no, you pass to the right. Now my question is, who is right?

Well we have been doing it wrong for years then. Might be because my father was left handed and did everything from the left. He always started the meal and we have continued that tradition too.
